- Amos 8:11
I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.
– Amos 8:11
This verse tells us why we’re spiritually thirsty and hungry, and living in a state of negativity and weakness, and why the church is desolate. It is because we don’t seek the words and work of God, much less do we listen to His words. As a result, we have lost the provisions ofand are suffering a famine. It’s just like the end of the Age of Law, when the temple became desolate. It was because God had departed from the temple and the had expressed words and launched the work of redemption outside the temple. Once God’s new work began, the Holy Spirit no longer worked in the temple but defended the work of the Lord Jesus. Those who followed Him attained the provision of the living water of life, being sated in the spirit and enjoying peace and joy brought by the work of the Holy Spirit. The priests, scribes and Pharisees who served God in the temple for generations, and the Jewish people only clung to the laws, instead of accepting the words and work of Jesus, so they didn’t gain the provision of life, lost the Holy Spirit’s work, and suffered a famine; the temple turned into a den of thieves. Not only did they not follow the Lord Jesus, but they also resisted and condemned the work of the Lord Jesus, and even blasphemed the Lord Jesus, and finally joined forces with the Roman government to nail the Lord Jesus, who did the redemptive work, to the cross alive. They committed a heinous crime and were cursed by God.
Now let’s look at the modern-day religious world. The pastors and elders and preachers only interpret biblical knowledge and theological theory to show off and testify themselves, and to make others admire them. They don’t follow the way of the Lord or spread the Lord’s words, nor do they testify or exalt the Lord, much less do they guide brothers and sisters to seek the Holy Spirit’s work and words. Consequently, brothers and sisters couldn’t gain the supply of the living water of life. They all generally live in a negative and weak state, and their faith and love have grown cold. Many of them follow the evil trends of the world, pursue money, fame and gain, and fleshly enjoyments, are snared in sin and its enjoyments, have fallen deep into the sin, and couldn’t extricate themselves from living in sin. The scene of the desolation of the church appeared again. We can’t help but think: The prophecies of the return of the Lord have been basically fulfilled, so it is the crucial moment to welcome the Lord’s return. However, we have lost the work of the Holy Spirit and couldn’t feel the Lord’s presence. This way, we will be abandoned by the Lord soon. So how can we keep pace with the Lord’s footprints, and gain the Holy Spirit’s work and the supply of the living water of life? The Lord Jesus once said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). From the Lord’s words, we come to understand that Christ is the truth, the way, and the life, and that God’s sheep hear. If we want to follow God’s footprints and welcome His appearance, we need to draw lessons from the failure of the Pharisees to have . We should seek and investigate the words and work of the returned Lord in the last days with a God-revering heart, and listen for God’s voice. Only then will we have the chance to welcome the Lord’s return and gain the watering and supply of the living water of life. Just as God says, “Since we are searching for the footprints of God, it behooves us to search for , for the words of God, for His utterances—because wherever there are new words spoken by God, the voice of God is there, and wherever there are the footsteps of God, God’s deeds are there. Wherever there is the expression of God, there God appears, and wherever God appears, there the truth, the way, and the life exist.”
